Thanks for considering joining our American Legion Post. Here is some information on our local Post. The Post is one of the oldest organizations in Steamboat. We were chartered in 1920 and we have been an important part of the community since then. Our membership runs between 80 and 90 members. About 40 are life members that do not live here or are WWII members that are no longer active in the Post. Of the remaining we have around 25 members that are active or help at times with Post activities, and around 15 that regularly attend meetings. We have no requirements for attendance at meetings, but hope that you would try and make most of the meetings. We try to keep the agenda short so that meetings do not last more than an hour and a half.
Our main Post activities are to furnish honor guards for families that request military honors for their loved ones. We average about 4 funerals a year and try to rotate members so that it does not become a burden. Memorial Day is a big event for the Post and we try to have at least 20 members participate. Other events that only require a few members to participate in are: The 4th of July parade, the Labor Day Air Show, a bi annual USO fund raising dance, and of course the veterans day activities at the schools.
The last four years the Post has received a grant from the Veterans trust Fund to help pay for transportation to VA health care facilities. As a side light to this, the Post is active in trying to get more veterans to sign and take advantage of VA health care.
Youth projects are also important to us. The Post supports the local American Legion baseball team, which in the last two years has went to the State tournament and this year won the Legion Class B State Tournament. We also support Boy Scout projects, the Civil Air Patrol cadets and try to send one or two boys to Boys State each year.
Your membership is also important because it counts on the State and National levels for helping the Legion lobby veteran issues that affect not only you, but especially our men and women coming home from OIF and OEF. On the State level, last year the Legion was successful in getting bills passed that protected our State Veterans Nursing Homes and helping National Guard members obtain benefits.
On the National level, the American Legion along with other veterans organization were able to get Congressional approval and funding for the new VA medical center in Denver. This will be a state of the art hospital scheduled for completion in 2015 that include a 30 bed spinal injury unit and a mental health unit for TBI and PTSD. Also the Legion was instrumental in getting the new GI bill passed, which provides tremendous educational opportunities for our returning veterans. Most important now is the American Legions efforts to work with Congress and the VA to reduce or eliminate the claims backlog. So you membership does count and gives the Legion the strength to insure all veterans get the benefits they deserve.
